No. 1. Samsung Galaxy M12

Samsung’s introduction of a 90Hz screen on a budget phone is definitely a step in the right direction. There are some areas of improvement though, such as the performance and cameras. Overall, the giant 6,000mAh battery and clean UI make up for it to some extent, making the Galaxy M12 a decent buy.

The Galaxy M12 uses a plain polycarbonate design that feels rigid and offers a firm construction. A textured finish is present on most of the back, while a quad-camera setup in a square housing sits flush with the body. There is no fingerprint sensor on the back with Samsung choosing instead to integrate it with the power button, a much more preferable choice. The phone does appear prone to scratches, with a few dinks visible just from keeping the phone in my pocket for a couple of hours. Its narrow frame lets the device sit more comfortably in my palm, although this is negated due to the hefty weight. It is good to see Samsung using a USB Type-C port for its affordable devices, and that is present at the bottom alongside the 3.5mm headphone jack and speaker grille. The M12 won’t win any style awards but that is not really the point of the phone. Its durability, sturdiness, and ergonomic design elements will matter more to its target demographic.

Samsung has introduced a new 8nm chipset called the Exynos 850 SoC that has 8 cores running at a maximum of 2GHz. On paper, it appeared effective in swiftly conducting basic tasks on the Galaxy M12. Truth be told, the performance on the device is nothing spectacular but is on par with other budget-focused devices. Benchmarks revealed as much with the phone getting scores of 178 and 1,012 on single-core and multi-core tests on Geekbench 5. Normal day-to-day usage was fine with apps opening up at a decent pace and switching between them being seamless enough. However, the phone is not meant for heavy-duty gaming, as can be expected at this price point. It offers 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of internal storage along with a microSD card slot that extends it to 1TB. You are also getting a fingerprint scanner that’s surprisingly fast. The speaker is a bit tinny for my liking but there is a headphone jack for a wired audio experience. It would also be prudent to mention that the device misses out on dual-band Wi-Fi.

No. 2. Redmi Note 9

The Redmi Note 9 has been launched in India starting at Rs 11,999. It is the third and cheapest phone in the Note series thanks to its slightly downgraded specifications. Yet, the Redmi Note 9 does boast of powerful hardware such as the MediaTek Helio G85 chipset, 48MP quad cameras and a large 5,020mAh battery with fast charging support. We review the Redmi Note 9 to find out whether this is the best phone under Rs 15,000.

The Redmi Note 9 comes with a familiar design and doesn’t offer that premium look and feel as the Redmi Note 9 Pro. That being said, the phone does offer powerful hardware and a long-lasting battery life with fast charging support that makes it a pretty solid all-round affordable device.

The Redmi Note 9 comes with a plastic unibody rear panel that curves all the way to the front to meet the Gorilla Glass 5 on the fascia. The phone comes in Pebble Grey, Arctic White, and Aqua Green colours and we received the latter option for review. The Aqua Green colour has a cloudy finish rather than glossy or reflective. It will pick up smudges and scratches along the way. Luckily, you do get a silicone case in the box to protect the phone from just that.

The fingerprint sensor is placed just below the square-shaped camera module. We feel the module could have been deeper to identify the sensor easily as our finger would often touch the camera module instead. The phone comes with a triple card slot for two nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. The device also gets a Type-C port at the bottom with the headphone jack and speaker grille on either sides.

Coming to the cameras, you get a 48MP quad camera setup on the Redmi Note 9. The system includes a 48MP f/1.8 CMOS sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP depth sensor. This is a pretty good camera setup for the price as the main camera delivers crisp and bright photos in daylight with rich colours and detail. Wide-angle photos show a slight change in colours, but still look usable in daylight. The macro lens can get up to 2cm close to a subject, resulting in some good-looking macro shots in daylight, but we did see a shift in colour temperature compared to regular close-up shots. The portrait mode can take crisp bokeh shots of the subject in daylight, but it does tend to overexpose the background. Night photography is just about average with Night mode doing little to improve things.

Redmi Note 9 houses a 5,020mAh battery, which can easily take you through a day and a half on general usage that involves some gaming, video streaming, messaging and social media browsing. In our PCMark battery test, the phone lasted 13 hours and 33 minutes, which is not the best time we’ve seen in this segment, but it is still pretty good.

No. 3. Redmi Note 10

Looking for the best deal under Rs 15,000? Then the Redmi Note 10 should be your top choice. It packs in all the right ingredients, such as a great display, capable processor, splendid cameras, and a lasting battery. Software niggles aside, the Redmi Note 10 has quite simply swept away the competition, at least until we see something from Realme’s camp.

The EVOL design on the Redmi Note 10 series has really won me over. The smooth matte-plastic finish on the back goes really easy on the eyes. The slight curves across the sides slope gently and combine with the glossy metallic frame for a comfortable grip in the palm. I really like the pearlescent-looking Frost White colour scheme, which is all but immune to fingerprints. The quad-camera layout sits nearly flush with the back and the positioning is similar to the Pro versions. Surprisingly the 3.5mm headphone jack, with Hi-res certification, is on the bottom which is definitely a better position for it as compared to the top (as seen on the Pro Max). The build quality seems robust and solid, and yet the phone feels extremely light in the hand (178g). Moreover, the company has provided an IP52 rating for dust and water resistance. The Redmi Note 10 clearly appears and feels like a device that could demand a much higher price tag than its sticker price. Xiaomi hasn’t cut any corners with the phone’s design and I’m going to go so far as to say that the Redmi Note 10 is the best-looking budget phone that I’ve held till now.

The Redmi Note 10 is also the only phone, apart from the old Galaxy M21, to offer an AMOLED screen in the under Rs 15,000 segment. Like is Pro siblings, the regular Redmi Note 10 also boasts of an FHD+ (2,400 x 1,080) panel that has a 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 Wide Color Gamut, and a minuscule punch hole at the top. While the 6.4-inch display is restricted to 60Hz in terms of refresh rate, the colour accuracy and dynamic range is impeccable. You can always customise the colour profiles, but I feel the default settings are good enough for any kind of viewing. HDR10 certification is understandably absent from the device, but WideVine L1 gives you access to HD content on OTT platforms. The Redmi Note 10 also boasts of nearly 1100 nits of screen brightness, which makes outdoor viewing in harsh sunlight a piece of cake.

Xiaomi has used the 48MP Sony IMX 582 sensor for the primary camera in Redmi Note 10’s quad-camera setup. The rest of the sesnors include an 8MP ultra-wide, a 2MP macro shooter, and a 2MP depth sensor. The company has been consistent with its camera performance over the years and that has clearly carried over to the Note 10 as well. Looking at the pictures shot using the phone, the colours look bright and punchy with a hint of oversaturation. Dynamic range is excellent for a budget smartphone with the lens getting the blues in the sky well even during overcast weather. Detailing is on point for brightly-lit scenarios and the sensor handles exposure well. Impressively enough, the colour temperatures are maintained quite well with the ultra-wide sensor.

Performance-wise, you get the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 chipset which is made using an 11nm fabrication process, and utilises the Cortex A75 and A55 cores at 2.2GHz and 2GHz respectively. On top of that, you also get the new Adreno 612 GPU which boasts an 800MHz clock speed. I have covered the gaming and benchmarks aspect of the phone. In short, the CPU-intensive tasks are performed exceedingly well, and this includes anything from multi-tasking to running several apps side-by-side or shifting through numerous Chrome tabs. The UFS 2.2 storage offers fast read and write speeds, while the 6GB RAM variant does help in running quite a few apps in the background.

 No. 5. Samsung Galaxy M21

Samsung has been toying around with the formula for a successful affordable smartphone lineup in India, the culmination of which is the M series. In general, Samsung focuses on three very important aspects that any affordable phone should have – a big battery, a respectable display, and a set of decent cameras. All of this would’ve been great just a couple of years back but today, even the affordable space is becoming feature rich. We are seeing high refresh rate displays, 64MP quad cameras, liquid cooling systems, high-performance chipsets, and more in a price tag of below Rs 15,000.

Amidst all this, Samsung is sticking to the basics with its latest entry into the M-series lineup, the Galaxy M21. There is a massive 6,000mAh battery, best-in-class AMOLED display and a 48MP triple-camera setup. The question I’m going to answer is whether this is enough to shell out a starting price of Rs 13,199. Let’s dive into the review.

As you would expect from an affordable phone, the Galaxy M21 has skimmed on physical aesthetics to make a durable device. The body and frame of the M21 are made from polycarbonate which does give out the glossy look of glass but is not as brittle. The curved back panel makes for an easy fit in the hand, although that is true for quite a few budget phones. The black colour variant I have received for my review doesn’t show any fingerprints unless you shine a light on it. It does scratch very easily, with my review unit showing signs of use after just a couple of hours of playing with it.

The front of the phone has the Infinity U-style display with a waterdrop notch housing the selfie shooter. On the bottom, you will find the standard Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a speaker grille. There are no extra buttons apart from the volume rocker and power buttons. A capacitive fingerprint sensor flanks the back of the phone along with a triple camera module that sits flush with the body negating any wobble when placed on a flat surface. The Galaxy M21 is also surprisingly lightweight even though it packs in a whopping 6,000mAh battery.

Samsung manufactures most of the displays seen on smartphones of several OEMs and it comes in as little surprise that it reserves the best for its own devices. Whether it is an entry-level device or an ultra-premium flagship, Samsung is known to deliver a class-leading viewing experience. The M21’s 6.40-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution conforms to the pattern. As expected, the colour accuracy of the M21’s screen is quite remarkable as are the contrast levels. The Galaxy M21 also happens to have Widevine L1 certification to watch streaming services’ content in HD.

The camera system on the M21 is almost the same as that of the GalaxyM31. but with the absence of the macro lens. There’s a 48MP primary snapper on the M21 in a triple-camera layout with the other two being an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 5MP depth sensor.

When plenty of light is thrown at the main lens it will click respectable shots with good dynamic range and exposure handling. There is, of course, Samsung’s signature pumping up of colours in photos to make them look more contrasty, although at its price that is not a drawback. Detailing is respectable although the sensor has a hard time focusing on close-up objects. Since the Galaxy M21 uses pixel binning, standard photos are of 12MP resolution. A separate 3:4 48MP mode is present to take in more detailed photos but in general, there were not a lot of extra details present in the mode. As a matter of fact, the 48MP mode churned out slightly dull-looking photos in comparison.

The 10nm-based Exynos 9611 powers the Galaxy M21, which is the same SoC found inside the more expensive Galaxy M31. While there is technically nothing wrong with this chipset, there is a discernible amount of lag that I noticed during normal day-to-day activities. There was a small lag between clicking a photo and then previewing it, and this lag was more pronounced when viewing 48MP photos. If I had more than 5 tabs opened up in Chrome, there was a delay in opening more tabs and in general if multiple heavy apps were open in the background, I could feel a noticeable lag when opening more apps. You could say that I’m nitpicking but I’m used to smooth performance on the likes of the Realme 6 or even the

Redmi Note 9 Pro, which use the MediaTek G90T and Snapdragon 720G respectively. The M21 variant which I have received happens to have 4GB of RAM, although you can upgrade to a 6GB version for Rs 15,499.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that the Galaxy M21 possibly offers the best battery life you could get on an affordable smartphone. The gigantic 6,000mAh powerhouse pushes through one day of usage easily and nears on completing two days before the battery gives up. Our standard battery test which involves running a video on loop with half brightness and volume saw the phone last nearly 30 hours. About an hour of PUBG Mobile drained the phone off just 12 percent battery which is quite phenomenal in my opinion. The only gripe is the 15W charging which takes more than 2 full hours to completely juice the phone up.

No. 6. Redmi 9 Power

Redmi 9 Power is the perfect middle ground between the Redmi 9 Prime and Redmi Note 9. It packs a bunch of useful features, including an FHD+ display, stereo speakers, and a massive 6,000mAh battery to keep you satisfied. Yet, the performance of the phone may leave you wanting for more, which is where the Redmi Note 9 becomes more attractive.

The Redmi 9 Power doesn’t look like any other Redmi 9-series phone that the company has launched in India, which is good because that makes it stand out. However, the phone’s design isn’t entirely unique as I could see some inspiration from Realme devices in the Sunrise Design matt back panel (seen on the Realme C3), the rectangular rear camera system (on the Realme 7i), and the large Redmi branding (somewhat similar to the Narzo 10A). It’s also worth mentioning that the Redmi 9 Power is a rebranded Redmi Note 9 4G that was launched in China recently.

Despite offering a large 6,000mAh battery, the company has managed to keep the phone’s weight under 200 grams, which is impressive. At 198 grams, I wouldn’t call the device lightweight, but it is easier to hold and work with compared to say the Realme C15 that weighs 209 grams. The curved rear panel on the Redmi 9 Power and the textured feel makes it easy to grip the phone. The finish also means it doesn’t attract a lot of fingerprints smudges.

Redmi 9 Power features a quad-camera system that includes a 48MP Samsung GM1 sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. It’s a familiar camera setup that offers a few cameras that work well and others that are just there to make the spec sheet look good. The camera app is busy and can take a while to get used to. Features like Night mode, Panorama, and so on are hidden away within the ‘More’ section while the Macro mode is placed in the hamburger icon on the top right corner. This makes it a little difficult to quickly switch between modes.

The primary camera is able to capture bright photos in daylight with rich colours, especially with AI mode enabled. Sometimes, the colours can look a bit oversaturated and I found myself using the camera with AI mode disabled a lot of the time. There are also enough details in the photos to keep you happy. Dynamic range is not the best I’ve seen on a phone in this price segment, but it should get the job done.

The wide-angle lens delivered the expected results. While the wide-angle lens does let you capture a wider field of view, photos appear washed out and lack sharpness compared to the primary camera. It’s still a more reliable camera to fall back on compared to the macro lens. The 2MP macro lens can help you get really close to a subject, but the slow shutter speed makes it hard to capture a crisp still image.

Redmi 9 Power can run games like Call of Duty Mobile smoothly in medium graphics. While I noticed some lag and drops in framerate, the phone managed to deliver a fairly adequate gaming experience thanks to the stereo speakers. The massive battery also means you won’t have to worry about a graphically-intensive game like CoD Mobile draining the phone after a 30-minute session.

The Redmi 9 Power is the only phone in the Redmi 9 series to offer a 6,000mAh battery. One can expect the phone to last a good two days with a battery capacity this size and the Redmi 9 Power does not disappoint. The battery life is exceptional with the phone delivering a day and a half to two days on a single charge on moderate to intensive usage. The device offers long standby battery life as well. In our PCMark test, the Redmi 9 Power lasted 23 hours, which was impressive.
